Best Holiday Destinations for Your Contracting Downtime

While there are many benefits to choosing contracting over permanent employment — greater flexibility and a constant stream of new challenges are two great examples — perhaps one of the biggest advantages to this way of working is the ability to schedule contracts to allow for time off whenever you need it most. The problem, of course, is that it’s not always easy to identify the best, most effective use of this time!

If you’re struggling to think of some holiday destinations that will refresh, revive, and leave you feeling ready to tackle your next contract when you get back home, here are some great ideas to help you out:

1. Norway

Lengthy, complex contracts can be both financially and personally rewarding, but these sorts of arrangements can also mean a lot of time sitting at your desk. We all need a change of scenery now and then, so why not spend your contracting downtime in one of the most jaw-droppingly stunning countries in the world? Norway has everything your desk doesn’t: Majestic fjords, cascading waterfalls, lush green fields, dramatic mountaintops, and rugged cliffs. The entire country is an unbelievable feast for the senses.

2. Spain

Whether you’ve been working on-site for your latest client, or from the comfort of your own home, you might not have been getting too much Vitamin D since you started your contract (not that we get much here in the UK anyway!). If you’re feeling a little sun-deprived, it’s time to jet off to the Costa del Sol; quite literally 'the coast of the sun'. The city of Malaga enjoys more than 3000 hours of warm sunshine each and every year, making it the perfect place to catch some rays before your next contract begins.

3. California

Challenging contracts are perfect for helping you to enhance your skills and develop your talents, but at times you may pause to ask yourself if contracting is right for you. This is natural, and one of the best ways to get back on track is to re-ignite that passion for technology. A trip to California’s famous Silicon Valley will do just that. Home to some of the biggest tech organisations in the world, including Apple, Cisco, Intel, and Tesla, Silicon Valley is a top choice for motivating and inspiring budding IT leaders.

4. Sweden

Who says that holidays have to come to an end? Flexible contracting agreements mean you may be able to work from anywhere in the world, making it easy to extend your getaway for a little longer. If you do plan on working from abroad, consider holidaying in one of the world’s best connected countries, like Sweden. Sweden boasts some of the fastest internet speeds in the world, coming second only to Singapore, with a 46.00 average download speed (and just 14 minutes to download a 5GB movie).

Finding Your Next Opportunity:

It’s essential that contractors schedule downtime in between their contracts to give them time to relax, unwind, and regroup before taking on the next challenge. However, one of the main concerns for contractors is that they’ll find it difficult to secure a new contract after taking some time off. That’s exactly what Contract Recruit is here for; to help you to find and secure your next contract by providing you with details of all the latest contracting roles, from some of the biggest names in the industry.
